I am a doctor currently finishing up my final year of community service within the colourful walls of Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, informally known as “Joburg Gen”. I have been lucky enough to do a year in surgery with 3 months in plastic surgery and the rest in trauma.
It has been a great year for me and I have enjoyed every minute of it (well maybe not every minute). There has been very little that hasn’t passed through the gates of trauma casualty and at the end of it all I will walk away with great experience and many ridiculous stories to recount. However it seems that at this point in my career, now that I am released from the clutches of the department of health, I am reluctant to commit to a particular path and have decided to make a few new stories of a different nature.
I have longed dreamed of travelling through Africa, my birthplace and a continent I know so little about. The beginning of next year sees the opportunity for me to escape and spend 3 months travelling down the length of Africa. I hope to learn much, see plenty and meet many along the way, whilst hopefully giving something back in return. I hope that you will join me on this journey, follow my progress and get in contact if you are planning or will be travelling along along the same route.
